In complex area developments, spatial, social, and ecological challenges are deeply intertwined. How can we create coherence between them—and avoid reinventing the wheel each time? Within the Maakruimte learning community, designers, policymakers, and researchers have been collaborating to develop new ways of learning and doing in the fields of energy, agriculture and nature, and liveable cities and regions.
In this session, we will showcase how Core Team 3 – Liveable Cities and Regions used the power of design to forge unexpected connections in Leeuwarden-Oost and developed a framework for progress that can also be applied by other municipalities. You will discover how a short learning intervention can grow into a long-term exchange of knowledge—and how to transfer that knowledge to your own region.
What to expect
- Inspiring examples and practical lessons from the development framework for Leeuwarden-Oost, one of the 20 cities included in the National Programme for Liveability and Safety (Nationaal Programma Leefbaarheid en Veiligheid | NPLV).
- Tools to help you make learning and design power a structural part of your spatial challenges.
Speakers
- Kristian Koreman & Jurian Strik – urban designers. They will share inspiring examples, including from Leeuwarden-Oost, where the power of design created unexpected connections between spatial and social aspects.
- Quirine Winkler – project leader of the Maakruimte learning community. She will share the approach and lessons from the learning community on how to evolve from a one-off intervention into a long-term exchange of knowledge around a shared practice.
For whom
Municipalities, policymakers, designers, researchers, spatial developers, and project leaders working in NPLV areas or on similar spatial challenges.

Why participate?
Just like in Leeuwarden-Oost—where we explored how poverty, health, and social security are interconnected, and where the power of design created unexpected links between policy and everyday life—we want to show in this session what happens when you apply that same perspective in other contexts. Using the lessons from Core Team 3 as a starting point, we will jointly explore how to translate these insights to your own municipality or region.
