Well-being in the City
What if.. our public spaces felt like home?
As the world changes rapidly, our desire to connect—with each other and with our environment—grows stronger. Public space plays a key role in fostering this connection. But how should a city be designed to make its residents feel healthy, happy, and safe? Sweco, Europe’s largest architecture and engineering firm, recognised that current urban designs often no longer align with the needs of modern communities. Seeking fresh perspectives, they partnered with Dutch Design Foundation to explore innovative solutions for the public spaces of tomorrow.
Sweco invited three design studios—Rombout Frieling, Studio 1:1, and Olifantenpad CS—to reimagine gathering spaces through the lens of well-being.
-
BODYSCAPE by Rombout Frieling: A landscape intervention that turns outdoor environments into welcoming places for rest, work, and even meetings. By responding intelligently to natural elements, it encourages people to spend more time outside.
-
Shadow Spaces by Studio 1:1: Tackling climate challenges like heat stress and water overflow, Studio 1:1 developed a catalogue of green and social interventions. This modular approach helps transform overlooked urban spots—such as underpasses—into spaces for sports, social interaction, and community-building.
-
What if it’s up to you? by Olifantenpad CS: Shifting design power to residents, this studio uses a digital toolbox and VR to let communities design their own squares. Concepts are refined through neurofeedback and interviews, ensuring inclusivity and genuine user connection.
