Grassroots invites creatives to join the upcoming open call to explore how design can strengthen innovative agrofood startups by rethinking a Minimum Viable Ecosystems (MVEs) that can make them a success. Join the Grassroots Webinar to learn more.

Open Call: take part in the agri-food transition

Over the next two years, Grassroots will work with three startups, Magie Creations, Circle Farming, and Grassa, each tackling different challenges in the food transition, from reducing waste and creating healthier products to enabling local plant-based food production and unlocking the full potential of grass as an ingredient.

In addition, Grassroots is collaborating with three start-ups; Magie Creations, Circle Farming and Grassa, each contributing to the food transition in their own way. Their challenges range from reducing food waste and developing healthier products to enabling local, plant-based food production and unlocking the full potential of grass as a raw material.

Within the MVE Food stays food, Magie Creations focuses on connecting food products with meaningful stories for the conscious consumer. Drawing on their expertise in ingredients made from brewers’ spent grain, they show how taste, health, sustainability and affordability come together in compelling food concepts.

Within the MVE A healthy food landscape around densely populated communities, Circle Farming enables local, diverse and plant-based food production on relatively small plots of land and reconnects people with their food, from working in the fields to consuming locally. At the same time, it supports farmers in the transition to regenerative agriculture, strengthens biodiversity and soil health, and contributes to the creation of green, resilient landscapes where nature, agriculture and communities come together.

Within the MVE Marketplace for alternative ingredients, Grassa unlocks the full nutritional value of grass through a natural process of pressing, heating and filtering. This results in both high-quality feed for cows and other ruminants, as well as plant-based ingredients for human and animal consumption. Grassa helps dairy farmers make their business models more flexible, reduces pressure on animal efficiency, and increases the effective use of grass as a raw material, with less nutrient loss and a positive impact on sustainability, soil health and CO₂ reduction.

By bringing in fresh design perspectives, creatives can help these startups and their ecosystems take root, experiment, and generate greater societal impact, contributing to systemic change in the agrofood sector. For each Minimal Viable Ecosystem, €25,000 is available to support creative contributions. Applications are open from February 16 to March 15.

Join the Grassroots webinar on 16 February

Join the Grassroots webinar on February 16, from 15:00 to 16:30, to learn more about the project, gain deeper insight into what a Minimum Viable Ecosystem (MVE) is, and discover the three challenges for creatives interested in applying to the open call. The session will conclude with a Q&A, giving you the opportunity to ask questions about the project, the MVEs, and how you can get involved. We look forward to exploring together how design can help drive the food transition forward.
