DDF and the Ministry of Justice and Security showcase the power of design in transforming safety practices in a new online publication
At first glance, it may not seem like the most obvious collaboration: the Ministry of Justice and Security operates in a sector where unforeseen developments and unexpected outcomes are viewed as risks to be avoided, while the design field is known for embracing them. The Power of Design: Transforming Safety Practices in 40+ Cases shows how these two sectors are already working together, and reveals the untapped potential this collaboration holds for the future.
“Digital security, crisis preparedness, major staff shortages… We are living in a different time, surrounded by uncertainty. In the safety domain, this uncertainty is often viewed as a risk. But when we choose to seek out and embrace that uncertainty, we create space for innovation.”
The selection of more than 40 projects is the result of an open call to the design field. The Power of Design: Transforming Safety Practices in 40+ Cases has been developed as a visual and interactive publication. Using a large web structure, it reveals the scale, complexity and interconnectedness of the various challenges.
To support smooth navigation, the publication is built around four layers: challenges, projects, makers and methods. This allows readers to move easily between safety themes, inspiration from concrete cases, insights from practitioners and the aims behind the design approach.
The leading safety themes featured in the publication include: Asylum and Migration, Criminal Goods, Crisis, Disinformation, Detention, Drugs, Hackers, Intimidation, Undermining, Profiling, Sex and Exploitation, Social Safety, Shortages, and Weapons.
The online publication was first presented during Dutch Design Week as part of DDF’s Designing Society exhibition on Ketelhuisplein. With this work, DDF hopes to inspire designers, policymakers and safety specialists to explore a key question: “How can a design-driven approach support the challenges I am working on?” The full publication is now available at ddf-veiligheid.nl.
